I was born with wanderlust. Raised in Illinois, I longed to travel and would often daydream about all the far away places I wanted to see. I jumped on the first opportunity I had to go abroad, and spent my junior year in college at the Sorbonne in Paris. Armed with a BA in French, I then went to San Francisco to seek out my fame and fortune. There, I landed a job as switchboard operator and receptionist at KQED, the public TV station, where I met my future husband and did on-the-air promos in French for my idol, Julia Child, proving to my parents that French was a useful major after all.
I became restless after five years, so I joined the hospital ship HOPE for three voyages – Guinea, Nicaragua, and Tunisia and then shortly after we married, my husband and I went to Algeria and Iran to work. Much as we loved the excitement of living abroad, eventually we returned to California to raise our two children in our mountain-top home overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Now that we're safely settled in one place, I find that writing is another way of making life more exciting.
