Will her boss go downon bended knee? For years GP Ruby Hollister longed to return to Swallowbrook village – she just never anticipated being homeless when she finally did! Which means she has to throw herself at the mercy of broodingly handsome new colleague Dr Hugo Lawrence and his spare flat…Free of all emotional responsibility for the first time in his life, Hugo’s determined to relish his freedom – the last thing he wants is a fragile, beautiful waif living on his doorstep! Only the secret sadness in Ruby’s eyes calls to his inner protector, and a bachelor lifestyle no longer seems so appealing…
Deeply emotive.

Rating"Sometimes in life you have a cross to bear but it is better to accept your lot and make the best of it.
Strangle, while Ruby to some extent wallowed in self pity and was supremely selfish in that she would not tell Hugo whose angst was almost palpable the truth he deserved to know the overall strength of their character overcame this.
While the ending brings a warm glow it is also tinged with great sadness.
Mrs Gordon's depiction of English village life and it's medical providers is always satisfying and there is a je ne sais quoi to this which really touches the inner core.
It may very well be her best book ever.
Ten out of ten."
