Having my stories resonate with readers, making them happy or sad or inspired.

Sitting at the blasted computer.

I like to make up whole worlds and then invite the readers to visit.

A Christmas Blessing, because that’s when I met the indomitable Harlan Adams and his family—and Amazing Gracie because it’s set in an area of Virginia I love.

Carla Neggars’s On Fire published by MIRA.

At Home in Mitford by Jan Karon
What one specific piece of advice would you give a would-be writer trying to kick-start a career?
Persistence. If one person’s rejection can shatter your faith in yourself, you’re in the wrong business.
Describe the ultimate romantic meal.
On a terrace overlooking the sea, with good wine, good conversation, great food, and a very good friend.
What is your all-time favourite movie?
Now, Voyager, followed closely by anything with Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn.
What is your all-time favourite song or composition?
The Two of Us.
What is the most unusual or unique gesture or gift you have received?
A pair of earrings hung on a Christmas tree.
What tip would you give your readers to make their lives more romantic?
Never take the person you love for granted.
Where is the most romantic place you’ve ever travelled?
A small inn overlooking the Danube in Germany, with lilacs blooming below the terrace.

Besides writing, what other talent would you most like to have?
I wish I could actually hit one single note of a song.

My father, a true Southern gentleman in his own quiet way.
